"This comes from the Mokuroku Catalog of Shichirōzaemon Takumi (Fukuno). This particular school is called Ryōi Shintō-ryū, Yawara. This employs the strategy of using the strengths and weaknesses of the body and its joints. When one is ignorant of where physical strength lies, that tends to make those strengths even greater.

But when you know where the body is weaker, that causes its strengths to become less effective. The former masters said that strength fails, ceasing to be strength, when swiftness is applied to that, and there are secret arts to achieve all of this. These arts have been able to devise hundreds of thousands of cunning tactics all of which have strength as a father, and weakness as a mother. By using a rather unique rhythm, and giving preference to the rhythms that it uses, such that one can perceive that strength cannot at all proceed against a mere open palm that has been placed. Theoretically anyway, it works very similar to the way that the wind offers to topple a dead tree. Even the [branches of] the riverside willow float and drift in the breeze. Knowledge of this was corrupted in the world until there was some ignorance about these things, as a path it was once learned and acquired. It had not yet become a treasure throughout the nation itself. And there is the secret of what is called 'the Storm' as well. The more violent storm winds are quite disruptive. This is so even when the quieter less tangible winds. The stronger and more rigid a thing is, the fiercer the winds attack it, while the weaker objects only flail more gently. The wind likewise attacks a person’s body, and may cause collapse if one is not careful. Though it may shatter in the end, there are some tremendous techniques that have been based off of it. It is all based off of the principles of the four elements: Earth, Water, Fire and Wind. Although separate all of them are weaker, when combined they are, to the contrary, much stronger. Composed of other secrets as well, they all carry a sense of being able to ruin [an enemy]. While resembling the works of evil, when used to counter evil, it then becomes good. But when used disrespectfully it causes folly. There are secrets about those subjects! But also, certainly there are things one absolutely should not do. Having explained what is preferable, there is what is true at any given time, and surely if the winds of the thing are blowing towards shame and dishonour, one has but to shrink back into the billowing mist.
