'Ryōi Shintō-ryū Wa-jutsu Taii' (良移心當流和術大意) - "The synopsis of Ryōi Shintō-ryū Wa-jutsu" (1833)

Published on 28 September 2024 by Peter King

This is a partial (amateur) translation of a 1833 document in my possession, entitled:
'Ryōi Shintō-ryū Wa-jutsu Taii' (良移心當流和術大意), which means "The synopsis of Ryōi Shintō-ryū Wa-jutsu".

.(Note: Wa-jutsu is an alternative term for Jūjutsu)

As can be seen, this document was written in old cursive script. I I was able to transcribe this using the Japanese 'Miwo' transcription app. However, I cannot be entirely certain that every chracter was exactly translated into modern Japanese. The text the dervived text was then translatied by Google Translate on 25th Sept. 2024. Where I have identified historial figures in the text and, other seemingly obvious errors, I have done my best to correct them, and subsitute what I believe to the the correct renderings.

"The synopsis of Ryōi Shintō-ryū Wa-jutsu

My family tradition is that I was the ancestor of the fifth generation of Japanese artists, my teacher Mori Hachiroemon, and I was the one who inherited the school from my teacher, Kasahara Shirosaemon. For generations, I have not carved out the name of the Kasahara, but I have been afraid of the things I learned from my teacher, and I have been very keen to learn the ancient ways. Even now, there are many people who are part of this same school, and I have been able to learn from many teachers."
