Ryōi Shintō-ryū (良移心当流) Kusarigama (鎖鎌)

I have had a training version of a 'Kusarigama (鎖鎌 - chain & sickle) made. Although, this is taken from the Isshin-ryū (一心流) design, you can see that it is very similar to the Ryōi Shintō-ryū (良移心当流) design that we wear on your badge. The significance of the kusarigama in Ryōi Shintō-ryū is that it […]

In the Jigō Tenshin-ryū Mokuroku (自剛天真流目録) it states, “When grappling on the battlefield (kumiuchi), Ryōi Shintō-ryū is best,” which places the focus on essential grappling on the battlefield. The aim is to be able to separate oneself in both mind and body and execute one’s techniques freely by becoming “soft on the outside and hard […]

The acknowledgement in Japan that schools (such as the Ryōi Shintō-ryū) that have 'died up' in Japan, still continue to exist outside of Japan, is an important recognition of the importance of such schools in maintaining those Japanese traditions. In the 'Encyclopedia of Japan' (https://doyouknowjapan.com/judo)Entry on 'Judo - Brief Overview of Judo'(Sub section): 'Judo and […]

Another excellent book by Eric Shahan.

Although, not directly concerned with Ryōi Shintō-ryū Jūjutsu, it does give translations of material (previously only available in Japanese) on a number of Edo and Meiji period Jūjutsu schools. I recommend this whole series 1 - 4 to anyone wishing to gain incite into the practice of Jūjutsu during the above eras.
