Ryōi Shintō-ryū Jūjutsu (良移心当流 柔術) was brought to the U.K. in 1924 (Japanese year - Taishō 13 大正13年) by Takeda Tatsu Sensei (竹田辰 先生). So, this year marks the 100th anniversary of Ryōi Shintō-ryū Jūjutsu in the U.K. & Ireland. Sadly, it seems that the lineage in Japan no longer exists, so we are now […]

Eric Shahan's latest book - 'Kodokan Jujutsu' provides an interesting overview of a number of historical Jūjutsu schools, including an illustration (see below) of Ryōi Shintō-ryū Jūjutsu (良移心頭流柔術) - 'Tachi Karami' (太刀搦 - sword bind / entangle), taken from 'Bushidō' (武士道) magazine Volume 1 - published in 1898 by the 'Dai Nihon Bujutsu Kōshūkai' (大日本武術講習会 […]

This is a partial (amateur) translation of a 1833 document in my possession, entitled:'Ryōi Shintō-ryū Wa-jutsu Taii' (良移心當流和術大意), which means "The synopsis of Ryōi Shintō-ryū Wa-jutsu". .(Note: Wa-jutsu is an alternative term for Jūjutsu) As can be seen, this document was written in old cursive script. I I was able to transcribe this using the […]

"There were many outstanding students at the Saka Dojo, such as Utaka Gondayu, Senoo Toshinoshin, Noda Rokuro, Shimosaka Sen'emon, and Uehara Shogo. Hansuke was blessed with a great teacher and good training partners, and Ten's (heaven’s) skills improved rapidly. It seems that the training of jujutsu at that time was very intense. The dojo was […]

I recenly obtained a copy of Leopold McLaglan's 1922 book entitled 'Police Jui Jitsu'. I believe that this formed the basis, at least in part, for the (London) Metropolitan Police's very practical Self-defence and Arresting techniques, which were taught until 1981.

I am grateful to USJJF & MAIF President - Bruce Bethers for recognising me as 9th dan (九段 Kudan) in Taiho-jutsu (逮捕術 arresting art) in the United States Taiho-jutsu and the International Taiho-jutsu organisations

The Jigō Tenshin-ryū (自剛天真流) is a school that was derived from the Ryoi Shintō-ryū (良移心当流) in the 19th century. I was looking at the Jigō Tenshin-ryū entry in Web Hiden's (Japanese language) Dōjō directory. I noticed similarities in content to, the Ryoi Shintō-ryū that I had learnt from my teacher James Shortt Sensei, so I […]
