I recently obtained the Seigō-ryū Kuden-sho makimono (制剛流 口伝書 巻物 - oral transmission document) Jūjutsu (柔術) scroll (see picture above)

It is dated Kyōhō 12-nen (1727), was written by Murakami Yoshifuki (村上義浮) and transmitted to Katō Youemon (加藤与右衛門).

The cursive style characters make it very difficult to read, but it’s subjects headings include:

• Shoji 諸事 (many things)
• Metsuke no koto 目付之事 (matters of observing - fixing on the eyes of the enemy)
• Ki no daiji 気之大事 (importance of Ki or spirit)

Serge Mol (Classical Fighting Arts of Japan - 2001) quotes the ‘Owari Gokachū Bugei Hashiri no Mawari’ (1830), which refers to another document the called; ‘Kitō-ryū Jūjutsu Keizu’, which states that Mizuhaya Chozaemon (水早長左衛門 ) learnt from a monk called Seigō, who was the brother of Miura Yojiuemon. Miura was a student of Ryōi Shintō-ryū (良移心当流) founder Fukuno Shichirouemon Masakatsu (福野七郎右衛門正勝) and studied Chinese Kenpō (拳法 – fist striking method) and Torite-no-jutsu (捕手の術 hard taking) with Fukuno under the Chinese monk Chin Genpin (陳元贇).

Mol says the the Owari document also suggests another theory that Mizuhaya was in fact the same person as Isogai Jirōemon, who was (together with Miura) was also a student of Fukuno and studied under Genpin.

Although, Mol expresses doubts about the above given the 200 years that had elapsed before the Owari document was writte.However, Seigō ryū does you the have an emphasis the technique of torite-no-jutsu and kenpō, which suggests a connection with the teachings of Genpin.
