This group was formed earlier this year under the auspices of the Ryōi Shintō-ryū Kenkyukai (Ryōi Shintō-ryū Research Society - 良移心当流 研究会) and aims to both study and promote the practice of Ryōi Shintō-ryū Jūjutsu in the Canadian / North American region.
After a brief input on Ryōi Shintō-ryū history and rational, we covered waza from the ‘Sho Mokuroku’ (初目録) level.• Ryote-dori (両 手 捕 - double hands grabbed), Koshi guruma (腰 車 - hip wheel), Keri age (蹴 揚 - rising kick), Katate dori (片 手 捕 - single handed grab), Ō goshi - (大腰 - major hip throw), Sho hane (諸 羽 - both wings i.e. double arm capture), Oikake dori (追掛捕 - following capture or capture from behind), Eri te dori (襟 手 捕 - collar hand grab) & Kata hane (片羽 - one wing - single arm captured)
We look at the application of Tenohira (手の平 - Palm strike) and ‘Jūji-gote’ (十字小手 – torsional wrist lock) within some of these waza.
We the trained in the use of Uke waza (受け技 - receiving techniques) against Ganmen tsuki (顔面突 - thrust punch to face). We practiced the Shime waza (絞技) technique of Ushiro hadaka jime (後裸絞- rear naked chokehold).
We then also covered counters against: Ushiro hadaka jime (後裸絞 - rear naked strangle), Ryote jime (両手絞- two handed front choke) and Hagaijime (羽交い締め - Full Nelson)
We concluded by practicing the Buki-waza (武器技 - weapons techniques) of: Rokushakubō-jutsu (六尺棒術 - staff techniques) and Hanbōjutsu (半棒術 - half-staff / baton techniques).
Once again, I am very grateful to everyone who attended the course for their great enthusiasm and energetic practice of Ryōi Shintō-ryū Jūjutsu during the seminar.
My grateful thanks also go to Shibu-cho (支部長) George Doyle-Bedwell, who organised this seminar and is promoting the Ryōi Shintō-ryū study group in Canada. His efforts and those of the other members of the group will undoubtedly contribute to the continuation of the Ryōi Shintō-ryū tradition into the future.
