Further to my previous post of 14th October 2021, entitled 'Early Edo Period - Ryoi Shintō-ryū Jūjutsu'. Here are some further details on the Oguri-ryū, which was contemporary to the Ryoi Shintō-ryū and also influenced by the Yagyū-ryū.
The founder (創始者 Sōshi-sha) of Oguri-ryū (小栗流) was Oguri Niemon Masanobu (小栗仁右衛門正信) an Edo period Hatamoto (旗本 - high ranking Samurai in the service of the Tokugawa Shogunate). He fought in the Battle of Sekigahara (1600 and the Siege of Ōsaka (1614-15).
As with Ryōi Shintō-ryū (良移心当流) founder Fukuno Shichirouemon Masakatsu (福野七郎右衛門正勝), Oguri studied Yagyū Shinkage-ryū (柳生新陰流) Heihō (兵法 - war method, strategy) under the famed Yagyū Sekishūsai Taira-no-Munetoshi (柳生石舟斎平宗厳). Yagyu is famous for disarming the future Shōgun - Tokugawa Ieyasu using Mutō-dori (no sword capture) during a demonstration in 1594.
It is said that the school was created from Kumiuchi (組討 - grappling) and that its primary element was Wa (和) i.e. Jūjutsu (柔術), but that by the end of the Edo period, Kenjutsu (剣術) had been added and had became primary (表 Omote) with Wajutsu (和術) as secondary (裏 Ura).
After Oguri’s time the school was taught within the Tosa domain (土佐藩), which is now Kōchi prefecture (高知県) on the Island of Shikoku (四国).
There is currently no record of Oguri-ryū surviving into the present time.
