Found in a research paper entitled:

‘The diffusion routes of Jiu-Jitsu to and in the U.S. since the turn of the last century to 1930s:Focus on the transfiguration and succession of Jiu-Jitsu by the two Americans’ By YABU Kotaro (2012) (Ritsumeikan University, Japan)

Yabu states that two Americans;, Risher W, Thornberry and John J. O’Brien studied Jigō Tenshin-ryū Jūjutsu (剛天 真流柔術) in the Nagasaki foreign settlement and then returned to the U.S.A..Jigō Tenshin-ryū Jūjutsu (剛天真流柔術), also alternatively know as Ise Jitoku Tenshin-ryū (為勢自得天眞流) is an off-shoot of the main Kasahara (笠原) line of the Ryōi Shintō-ryū Jūjutsu (良移心当流柔術).

The article says that even by the time that Thornberry had passed this system on to his student Samuel K. Linck, it still retained the identity of Jigō Tenshin-ryū Jūjutsu

In another article entitled ‘ A Beginning History of Old School Jujutsu - Part 1’ by Carl Cestari (2003) published online: on boxingscene.com

Cestari states that John J. O’Brien taught

i) Theodore Roosevelt Jr. who served as the 26th president of the United States from 1901 to 1909.

ii) Captain (later Colonel) Anthony Joseph Drexel Biddle Sr. (1874–1948), who taught hand-to-hand combat to U.S. troops during the First and Second World Wars. In addition Biddle's 'Do or Die' claims that he taught the FBI during J. Edgar Hoover's time.

iii) Cestari also mention that Thornberry's student Linck, went on to teach the Los Angeles Police.

In conclusion; this brings to light that a form of Ryōi Shintō-ryū Jūjutsu was taught to the U.S. President, U.S. military & the LAPD.
