The understanding of combative distances is an essential element that features significantly in the Menkyo Kaiden (免許皆伝) level of Ryōi Shintō-ryū Jūjutsu.

James Short Sensei would often speak about the longer range of projectile weapons and it seems that they were key to battlefield success during the Sengoku Jidai (戦国時代 'Warring States period').

Various studies agree that approximately 75% of battlefield deaths occurred due to the bullets, arrows and rocks. Next to that spears had a significant effect, whereas swords only accounted for 5% of deaths.
