Ryōi Shintō-ryū, Jigo Tenshin-ryū, Unarmed Combat & Savate

Further to my article of 11th February 2020, regarding how unarmed combat techniques based on the JigoTenshin-ryū (剛天 真流), which was a branch of Ryōi Shintō-ryū (良移心当流), were taught to the U.S. Military during WW1 & WW2, by Captain Anthony Joseph Drexel Biddle Sr

My thanks to Michael Quebec for posting this item in 'Vintage Martial Arts Media and History'

The article describes Biddle's additional training in Savate (traditional French kickboxing).

Both my teacher James Shortt and I, were also teachers of Savate and as such, can attest to its compatibility with Jūjutsu.

The article is as below:

"Joseph Drexel Biddle Sr., the real-life inspiration for the book "My Philadelphia Father" and the play and film "The Happiest Millionaire," was a multi-millionaire who's fortune allowed him to pursue his lifelong obsession for athletics, particularly combat sports.

He was the founder of the "Athletic Christianity Movement," taught hand-to-hand combat to the U.S. military, and was dubbed "Boxing's Greatest Amateur" in a 1955 Sports Illustrated article.

This August 16, 1905 article describes Biddle participating in a Savate French kickboxing exhibition match.

Biddle's son became a major general, and an American diplomat, and ambassador.

A photo from the 1967 musical comedy "The Happiest Millionaire," with Fred MacMurray as Biddle, engaging in a humorous boxing sparring session, is included."
