The book: "Heaven's Wind" by Stephen Earle (2017) deals with the life of the founder of Japanese Yoga - Nakamura Tempu. However, it also details his early training in the Jigō Tenshin-ryū Jūjutsu (自剛天真流 柔術 also known as, Ise Jitoku Tenshin-ryū), which was a branch of Ryōi Shintō-ryū Jūjutsu (良移心当流 柔術) and Earle describes it as follows:
"Fukuoka boasted an especially active martial arts training hall, or dojo (dōjō), called the Meidōkan." .......
"The immediate source of the methods taught at the Meidōkan, however, was almost certainly not Kano’s judo but a classical jūjutsu transmission from within the former Fukuoka fiefdom called Jigō Tenshin-ryū (自剛天真流 ). Like all classical styles, Jigō Tenshin-ryū. was a comprehensive fighting system that included not only empty-handed grappling but also use of the sword, spear, and other weapons.
