From the research paper: 'Ryōi Shintō Ryū Wajutsu' by Shinohara Shin’ichi. Publ. Tenri University (2005) (Translated from Japanese into English)
"In a decisive match between the Kōdōkan and the Police Department in Meiji 20 (1887), Nakamura Hansuke (Ryōi Shintō Ryū) of the Police Department and Yokoyama Sakujirō of the Kōdōkan fought based on the rules of the Kōdōkan and, after 55 minutes of fighting, it ended in a draw.
If the match had been carried out according to Ryōi Shintō Ryū martial-arts regulations, it is assumed that it would have been decided instantly.
In short, this proves that the randori of Ryōi Shintō Ryū is in no way inferior to the randori that the new Kōdōkan Jūdō specialised in."
